Halifax County
Separated from Lunenburg County in 1752, Halifax first held court at Hampton Wade’s house. The later courthouse site has served court purposes since 1803, with the landmark building dating from 1838–1839. South Boston contributes a different historical focus through its river crossing and subsequent community development. Museum collections connect that setting with railways, tobacco and the lives of local people. Public architecture and everyday objects provide complementary evidence: one records the county’s institutions, while the other can reveal the work, travel and household experiences that shaped life beyond the courthouse.
A museum visit can supply questions to carry into the wider landscape. Follow a transportation theme from a rail exhibit to the geography of a town, or compare an account of agricultural work with the county’s present rural setting. The Prizery and local racing venues offer scheduled experiences that call for a different kind of planning. For outdoor time, consult Staunton River State Park’s current notices before choosing activities. Keeping a flexible second stop makes it easier to adapt to weather, programs and the amount of time a destination deserves.
What Shapes Us
Objects And Memory
The county museum’s varied collections make local history tangible. An ordinary tool, household object or transport display can raise questions that a chronology alone cannot answer about the people who lived and worked here.
River And Town
South Boston and Halifax provide different reference points within the same county. Explore their individual settings rather than assuming a shared jurisdiction produces identical histories, visitor experiences or relationships with the surrounding rural landscape.
A Day With Purpose
A performance, museum program or race can anchor a visit. Confirm that central activity first, then leave room for a quieter stop that helps connect an event with the community hosting it.

Halifax County was separated from Lunenburg County in 1752, with its first court meeting at Hampton Wade's house. The later courthouse site has been used for court purposes since 1803, and the landmark building dates from 1838–1839. These stages distinguish the beginnings of county government from the architecture seen later in the town. The surviving documentary record adds another dimension, allowing the civic setting to be explored through individual families, land transactions and community institutions as well as through buildings.
Begin with the courthouse's exterior and historical interpretation, then choose a particular local-history subject for further exploration. Architectural studies and county records answer different questions, so a focused inquiry can use both. Check current arrangements before entering government space or requesting research assistance. A town visit gains depth when the landmark is connected with the people and property described in the county's documentary collections.
The 2020 Census geography figures record 817.731 square miles of land and 11.786 square miles of water in Halifax County. The county’s total area includes both. These are geographic measurements for that Census vintage, not a measurement of current water levels or public recreation access.
In the Census Bureau’s 2025 estimate series, Halifax County had an estimated 33,939 residents on July 1, 2020, and 33,447 on July 1, 2025.
